Quantum and Phonon Interference in Molecular-scale Thermoelectric Materials (TherMol)

Fellow: Dr. Hatef Sadeghi

Abstract: Generation of electricity from heat via the Seebeck effect is silent, environmentally friendly and requires no moving parts. This proposal aims to design new thermoelectric materials for converting waste heat into electricity, by exploiting room-temperature quantum interference (RTQI) and room-temperature phonon interference (RTPI) in cross-plane (CP) nanodevice architectures. The radically-new CP nanostructured materials will be formed from parallel-arrays of molecules or multi-layered van-der-Waals (vdW) heterostructures sandwiched between metallic and/or graphene electrodes. This will be the first time that RTQI and RTPI are exploited simultaneously in  manymolecule systems or vdW heterostructures to yield a new generation of high-performance thermoelectric materials.
